SELF-GUIDED PRACTICE
How to practice
- Begin only with a difficulty that feels workable, and ground yourself before bringing anyone to mind.
- Start with yourself or someone you naturally care about rather than the hardest person or situation.
- On the inhale, acknowledge the suffering symbolically, without trying to absorb or fix it.
- On the exhale, imagine offering relief, steadiness, courage, warmth, or space.
- Keep the imagery simple and gentle; the practice is compassion training, not taking responsibility for everything.
- If the emotion becomes too strong, return to breathing for yourself or to a neutral grounding object.
- After several rounds, widen the wish to others with similar difficulty if that feels steady.
- Close by resting in the body and recognizing your own need for care as well.
Stay comfortable. You can stop at any time or return to your natural breath.
