SELF-GUIDED PRACTICE

How to practice

  1. Begin only with a difficulty that feels workable, and ground yourself before bringing anyone to mind.
  2. Start with yourself or someone you naturally care about rather than the hardest person or situation.
  3. On the inhale, acknowledge the suffering symbolically, without trying to absorb or fix it.
  4. On the exhale, imagine offering relief, steadiness, courage, warmth, or space.
  5. Keep the imagery simple and gentle; the practice is compassion training, not taking responsibility for everything.
  6. If the emotion becomes too strong, return to breathing for yourself or to a neutral grounding object.
  7. After several rounds, widen the wish to others with similar difficulty if that feels steady.
  8. Close by resting in the body and recognizing your own need for care as well.

Stay comfortable. You can stop at any time or return to your natural breath.
