SELF-GUIDED PRACTICE

How to practice

  1. Sit or lie down in a position that feels emotionally easy and physically supported.
  2. Let the inhale arrive naturally through the nose or mouth without trying to make it deep.
  3. Exhale a little longer than the inhale, only to the point that it feels soothing.
  4. Soften the jaw, tongue, eyes, shoulders, hands, and belly as you breathe out.
  5. Use a gentle phrase on the exhale if helpful, such as soften, easy, or it is okay to pause.
  6. Let each new inhale begin by itself rather than pulling air in quickly.
  7. If the breath feels controlled or stressful, stop counting and simply feel the body supported.
  8. Finish by breathing normally and noticing one area that feels even slightly softer.

Stay comfortable. You can stop at any time or return to your natural breath.
