SELF-GUIDED PRACTICE

How to practice

  1. Choose a mild or moderate difficulty, not the most overwhelming situation in your life.
  2. Sit comfortably and notice how this difficulty feels in the body right now.
  3. Acknowledge the pain plainly with a phrase such as this is hard or this is a moment of suffering.
  4. Remind yourself that difficulty is part of being human, even when the details are personal.
  5. Offer a realistic caring phrase, such as may I be kind to myself, may I give myself what I need, or may I meet this with patience.
  6. If helpful, place a hand on the heart, belly, or another grounding contact point.
  7. If the emotion becomes too intense, open the eyes and return to the breath, feet, or room.
  8. End by naming one supportive action you can take after the practice.

Stay comfortable. You can stop at any time or return to your natural breath.
