SELF-GUIDED PRACTICE

How to practice

  1. Sit upright and let the breath stay natural rather than controlled.
  2. Choose whether one count means a full inhale-exhale cycle or each exhale, then keep that method consistent.
  3. Count silently from one to ten, placing each number lightly on the chosen part of the breath.
  4. Feel the breath sensations while counting so the number does not become purely mental.
  5. When you reach ten, begin again at one.
  6. If you lose the count, skip a number, or realize you were thinking, restart calmly at one.
  7. Do not use the count as a score; it is simply a way to notice attention clearly.
  8. End by dropping the numbers and feeling several natural breaths.

Stay comfortable. You can stop at any time or return to your natural breath.
